Square Nuts are, as the name suggest, squared for a special reason. The Square Nut was one of the oldest fasteners known. The square design was easier for early tools, such as a wrench or other tools, to fasten the nut in place.

The reason is also because the Square Nut is able to prevent turning when pressure is applied.
The common finish for the Square Nut is zinc or yellow Zinc coating.
Other materials such as stainless steel, brass, or aluminum are also used to make Square Nuts.
